Everything it took to run a store. We had to keep expenses to a minimum. That is where it started, yearsago. Our money was made by controlling expenses. That, and Sam always being ingenious. He neverstopped trying to do something different. One thing, though: I never forgave him for making me clean outthat damned ice cream machine. He knew I'd hated milk and dairy products ever since we were kids. Heused to squirt me when he milked the cows. I always thought he gave me that job because he knew Ididn't like milk. He still laughs about it."We couldn't have felt better about our situation down there. Helen and I both have the kinds ofpersonalities that make us want to participate in community life, and we had become deeply involved. "'Ho! Ho!! Ho!!!' came thick and fast from every part of the camp. 男人到天堂a牛叉在线_夜线2 Then things began to shape themselves more definitely. Whatever happened he would be a clergyman no longer. It would have been practically impossible for him to have found another curacy, even if he had been so minded, but he was not so minded. He hated the life he had been leading ever since he had begun to read for orders; he could not argue about it, but simply he loathed it and would have no more of it. As he dwelt on the prospect of becoming a layman again, however disgraced, he rejoiced at what had befallen him, and found a blessing in this very imprisonment which had at first seemed such an unspeakable misfortune. 鈥淗ave you ever heard of Margett鈥檚 Universal College?鈥? ELLEN and he got on capitally, all the better, perhaps, because the disparity between them was so great, that neither did Ellen want to be elevated, nor did Ernest want to elevate her. He was very fond of her, and very kind to her; they had interests which they could serve in common; they had antecedents with a good part of which each was familiar; they had each of them excellent tempers, and this was enough. Ellen did not seem jealous at Ernest鈥檚 preferring to sit the greater part of his time after the day鈥檚 work was done in the first floor front where I occasionally visited him. She might have come and sat with him if she had liked, but, somehow or other, she generally found enough to occupy her down below. She had the tact also to encourage him to go out of an evening whenever he had a mind, without in the least caring that he should take her too 鈥?and this suited Ernest very well. He was, I should say, much happier in his married life than people generally are. When we meet opposition to a prospective store site, we try to work with the opponents to see if wecan reasonably satisfy them. Occasionally, we will change a proposed location, or make someconcessions if they make sense to us. Today, though, we have almost adopted the position that if somecommunity, for whatever reason, doesn't want us in there, we aren't interested in going in and creating afuss. I encourage us to walk away from this kind of trouble because there are just too many other goodtowns out there who do want us. For every one that doesn't, I'd say we have another two hundredbegging us to come to their town. Wal-Mart wants to go where it's wanted. I've always said that thesimplest test of how right we are on this issue would be to go into any town where we've been for acouple of years and let everyone vote on whether they wanted us there or not. My Lord, they'd go crazyif we left. In fact, every now and then we do have to close up a store someplace because we just can'tmake it profitable, and the outcry is something awful. It's another part of the price you pay for success.
